Pure tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid that contains an indole ring structure and is structurally similar to tryptophan, which is where the name comes from. Tryptamines are found in the mammalian brain and function as neuromodulators or neurotransmitters. Similar to other trace amines, tryptamine binds to the human trace amine-associated receptor 1 (TAAR1) as an agonist. Tryptamines are a common functional group in a group of compounds known as collectively substituted tryptamines. This set includes many bioactive compounds, including melatonin, serotonin, bufotoxins, and psychedelic derivatives.
