How Are We Different?

The over 2000-year-old knowledge of the Chinese tradition regarding the benefits and cultivation of functional mushrooms is unique. Even today, Chinese cultivars produce the richest mushrooms. Cultivation has been perfected to such an extent that the cultivated mushrooms are in no way inferior to their wild-grown ancestors. Our mushrooms come from Fujian in Gutian County, the world's most renowned region for functional mushrooms. Our partner farm is certified organic according to EU standards and places great importance on natural, traditional cultivation methods. The mushrooms are harvested by hand between July and October at their peak compound content.

Mushrooms consist of the above-ground fruiting body and the mostly subterranean mycelium; both parts possess their own valuable properties and compounds. The mycelium can be cultivated particularly efficiently, enabling resource-conserving, rapid growth, during which the content of certain bioactive compounds—such as polysaccharides—can be purposefully influenced. The fruiting body, in contrast, offers a particularly broad spectrum of natural compounds. Our functional mushroom portfolio includes products from both the mycelium and the fruiting body, thereby making targeted use of the strengths of both components.

Among the most valuable components of functional mushrooms are the mushroom polysaccharides, especially the beta-1,3- and beta-1,6-D-glucans. Our mushroom extracts bundle these substances into a rich concentrate. The extraction is carried out according to the traditional method using only water, the purest and most gentle extraction process. As a result, they contain no toxic residues of chemical solvents (such as acetone, n-hexane, methanol).

Mushroom

Chaga (Inonotus obliquus, Fungus betulinus, "Clinker Polypore")

The Chaga mushroom originates from Siberia and northern China. It thrives on birch and other trees and is native mainly to the large birch forests of Russia, northern and eastern Europe and the Baltic States, as well as Canada, Alaska, the northern United States, Korea and Japan. For consumption as a vital mushroom, the mushrooms from living birch trees are especially attractive. Inhabitants of Siberia have been making the mushroom into a fortifying tea since time immemorial, nicknaming it "God's gift." Chaga has had a firm place in Russian and Chinese traditions for about 4000 years.

In Russia and Siberia, it was used, among other things, for sacred shamanic rituals, especially by the Khanty ethnic group, which also gave it the name it has today. Chaga was also a sacred mushroom among the Mesopotamians, Egyptians, indigenous tribes of North America, and the Japanese natives, the Ainu.

The use of Chaga was similar in all cultures - Chaga was almost always drunk as a tea. For this purpose, the woody mushroom is dried and crushed, producing chunks and powder that are infused with water to make a strong, tart-tasting tea.

Dark on the Outside, Light on the Inside

From the outside, chaga does not look like a typical mushroom, but rather like burned coal ("clinker") with a hard, brittle surface and cork-like texture. Chaga are dark brown or black with greyish-white spots. The hard crust is dark due to its high melanin content. High-quality chaga has a light amber colour on the inside.

Cultivation & Processing

Our medicinal mushrooms are sourced from the renowned mushroom-growing region of Gutian County (600-700m above sea level), in Fujian, China. The cultivation of mushrooms is an age-old tradition in the region, as is reflected by the unparalleled quality of these mushrooms. The fertile land, sophisticated substrates, as well as the climate, all contribute to a uniquely nutritious end product. Moreover, these pristine lands are protected by dense mountain forests, thus providing an ideal environment for the mushrooms to thrive. Our untreated mushrooms are certified organically grown according to EU standards. They are grown to full maturity and hand-picked at the peak of their vitality, between July and October.

In order to further preserve the high concentration of beta-glucans contained in the mushrooms, the gently dried and milled fruiting bodies of the mushroom are prepared as an extract. The extract is produced according to a traditional method using only water and edible ethanol. Water-ethanol extraction has been a part of Chinese as well as Western medicine for centuries, and has long been used to create plant extracts. The result is a pure, wholesome extract with absolutely no toxic extraction residues or chemical release agents (such as acetone, n-hexane or methanol).
