Fifty six boys and 28 girls aged 4 to 15.8 years were treated with oxandrolone during the 4 to 25 months. Measurement of height and bone age were made at the beginning and at 6 months intervals. The daily dose were 0.08 mg to 0.28 mg per kilogram. Predictions for adult height at the beginning of the study were compared with those at the end of the treatment period. The height velocity was increased 0.14 cm to 0.79 cm per month, height age was increased, and bone age was increased, but height age/bone age was not changed. There was no difference in height velocity between growth hormone dificient and normal variant short stature. The oxandrolone was most effective in aged 10 to 12 years, more effective in male than female. There was a increase of predicted adult height 157.3 cm to 158.8 cm. The oxandrolone increased plasma somatomedine C level. But the results were not confirmed obviously and needed for the further long term follow up.
