A powerful animal tranquillizer that has been infiltrating street drugs in the U.S. is now showing up in B.C.'s supply. Officials are especially concerned because it can't be reversed with naloxone.

About Xylazine

Xylazine is a veterinary sedative not approved for human use. Its presence in the illicit drug market poses new risks.

Key Concerns for British Columbia

• The drug is detected in the local street drug supply.
• Naloxone is ineffective against its effects.
• It increases the risk of fatal overdose.
• It can cause severe skin wounds and infections.

Public Health Response

Health authorities are warning drug users and the public about the dangers. Recommendations include:

• Using drugs with others present.
• Having multiple naloxone kits available, as while naloxone does not work on xylazine, it is still needed if opioids are present.
• Accessing drug checking services where available.
