Difference Materials Between FR1, FR2, FR3 and FR4

FR4 is the most widely used PCB base matertial, next is FR1 then FR2. But FR1 and FR2 are usually used for single layer pcb because they are not good for passing through holes. FR3 is not recommended to building multi-layer pcbs. FR4 is the best selection. FR4 is widely used because it is good to make from one layer to multi-layer pcbs. With only FR4, PCB companies can make all kinds of pcbs, which leaves the management and quality control much easier and eventually it can reduce the cost.

Different Types of FR4

• Standard FR4: as its name indicates, this is the standard FR-4 with heat resistance of the order of 140°C to 150°C.
• High TG FR4: this type of FR-4 has higher glass transition (TG) of around 180°C.
• High CTI FR4: Comparative Tracking Index higher than 600 Volts.
• FR4 with no laminated copper: ideal for insulation plates and board supports.

FR4 PCB FAQs

• 1. What is FR-4 Material? FR stands for Fire Retardant. FR4 is a glass fiber epoxy laminate. It is the most commonly used PCB material. FR4 uses 8 layers glass fiber material. The maximum ambient temperature is between 120°C and 130°C, depending on thickness. All these fr4 material properties make FR4 printed circuit boards popular among electronic contract manufacturers.
• 2. Why use FR4 PCB? FR4 is rightly the most used material in PCB construction. Boards made from FR4 are strong, water resistant, and provide good insulation between copper layers that minimizes interference and supports good signal integrity.
• 3. What is the difference between FR4 and FR5 PCB? FR4 has a Tg of 130° C (266° F) and a maximum operating temperature of 110° C (230° F). Thin inner laminates for multi-layer boards are also made of this material. Like FR4, but thermally more consistent. FR5 has a Tg of 160° C (320° F) and a maximum operating temperature of 140° C (284° F).
• 4. What is the advantage of FR4? FR4 has the advantage of having a good resistance-weight ratio. It does not absorb water, keeps high mechanical strength and has a good insulating capacity in dry or humid environments.
