Customer: How do I install a heater kit with a circuit breaker into a specific model?
Good morning, and thank you for your question. I have installed numerous heat strip kits into similar equipment, and I don't anticipate there being much of a difference. The 20kW heat strips require either two 60-amp double pole breakers from the breaker box or one 100-amp breaker with a splitter at the heat strips. There should be a connector in the equipment that allows for a plug-and-play setup. I will attempt to locate the manual for the heat strips, although that can be a bit challenging.
Is it correct that the HKR3 heat strips for the air handler require a three-phase breaker?
After wiring the breaker and connecting the 9-pin connector, make sure to review both manuals. It's important to set the correct fan speed for heating, which should be medium/high or high for a 20kW heat strip kit!
The heat strip is connected to a breaker.
I think it has the three-phase breaker connected. The issue is that the 20kw heat strip didn't include the manual.
How should I connect the breaker to the heat strip? It's not wired the same way as the 10kw.
Are you going to replace the heat strip kit? It seems that the new heat strips need a three-phase circuit from the breaker box. Could you provide a picture of the breaker for the heat strip?
Is there a three-pole breaker included with the new heat strips?

When upgrading from 10kw to 20kw, it's necessary to have an electrician install a three-phase circuit from the breaker panel in your home. Another important factor to consider is whether there is enough space in the breaker panel to accommodate the new circuit.
If your breaker panel is not compatible with three-phase current, you will require a different kit. The HKR20C would be suitable, but you must also add another 60-amp two-pole breaker from the breaker panel. A general guideline is 30 amps for every 5 kW of heat. I assume you have one 60-amp breaker for your 10 kW heat strips. The HKR20C will enhance your heating, but the additional circuit from the breaker panel is necessary.
If the current wiring is sufficient, I can install a 100 amp breaker and then utilize a splitter at the air handler. However, the three-phase heat strips won't be compatible; instead, the HKR20C or HKP20C heat kit will be necessary.
Thanks for your help; I really appreciate it!
I believe it's best for me to place an order for the HKR20C.
Do you have space in your breaker panel to install an additional 60-amp double pole circuit?
Two 60 amp double pole circuits are necessary! Additionally, make sure to increase the fan speed in heating mode if needed!
The HKP20C serves as the direct replacement for the HKR20C; I'm quite certain they are essentially the same product. :-)
I confirmed that the HKP20C is intended for package units, not air handlers.
I can utilize the HKP20C in the air handler since it indicates that the HKR20C is a heater strip suitable for use in the air handler.
The air handler model number is ARUF364216BA.
I understand that the hkr20c is suitable for both air handlers and package units, while the hkp20c is specifically for package units. I would recommend going with the hkr20c to ensure compatibility.
Thank you for your suggestion.
I won't tolerate being cold like I was last year!
I'm from Texas, and I need heat!
Texas here also
Thank you for using our services. We have a week to address this question. Is there anything else you require?
Out of curiosity, are you using a heat pump with that air handler or just air conditioning?
No, I don't have any more questions at this time. Please go ahead and close it out. I need to order the HKR20C, but I'm unsure when it will arrive.
Heat pump
My house has a footprint of 2000 square feet. If my research is accurate, I require a unit with 80,000 BTUs.
Which model of thermostat are you currently using?
I'll simply swap it out with the HRK20C until I can replace the unit, plus it's only a 3.5 ton.
Emerson
Yes, a 10kW system should help alleviate the chill, but a 20kW system will ensure your comfort.
I believe it's time for me to upgrade to a 5-ton unit.
Do you possess the ductwork necessary to accommodate it? For a five-ton compressor, you require 2,000 CFM of airflow across the indoor coil! Perhaps a quality energy setback thermostat could be effective. What is the tonnage of your heat pump?
I apologize, but 3.5 tons is likely insufficient for your home. A Honeywell Vision Pro 8000 could be beneficial.

Sorry, I can't find the HP.
Can I substitute the fan motor in the air handler with a 2000 CFM motor?
PH indicates a heat pump, while PA refers to an air conditioner for the first two digits.
Allow me to examine your air handler to determine if a 5-ton coil can be installed; it's not just the blower speed that matters!
I just placed an order for the thermostat, and it should arrive this evening.
Is there a chart for dip switch settings for heat and cool on the inside of the air handler? I notice that you have a 3-ton indoor coil paired with a 3.5-ton compressor. Could you provide the current dip switch settings inside the air handler?
What is the model number of the thermostat you purchased?

According to the wiring diagram, it is only a two-speed blower.
What is the age of the system?
LoL 10-year-old
No sorry 12
What is the number of wires connected to the thermostat?
Customer attachment 9/16/2022 4:55:04 PM
7 wires
Yes, that appears to be quite a challenge to rewire, especially since it indicates you have a two-stage cooling system. Additionally, it's unusual to see red on both the hot and common wires.
How many wires are present in the outdoor unit? It's currently raining here.
There are only five wires on the outside unit.

So, the pink wire is the common one, correct?
It's important to be cautious with the wires at the thermostat to avoid any short circuits when connecting. Ensure that the power to the air handler is turned off before handling the wires.
Oh yes, don't worry. Believe me, I know to turn off the power to the air handler before working with the wires.
I'm not aiming to make my children wealthy.
It's only 24VAC; it might cause a slight tingle. I'm more concerned about potentially blowing the fuse or transformer in the air handler!
Can I replace the fan motor with a larger one for the time being?
There's not much that can be done with the air handler. I would like to attempt running the heat pump alongside the auxiliary heat and observe how effectively it heats up.
There are several issues that need to be addressed to improve performance. The system is mismatched from the start, as it has a 3 1/2 ton compressor paired with a 3 ton indoor coil. Another consideration is whether you have the ductwork to accommodate a larger system. Have there been multiple remodels, or is the ducting all original? Airflow is particularly crucial for cooling. Does your A/C perform adequately on a hot day?
It stays cool on hot days; I prefer to set it to 78 degrees.
I have ample space to set up a bigger unit.
What causes the thermostat wires to be cracked and expose bare wires? Is there a wire stripper available to tidy them up during the thermostat installation? With the new thermostat, is it possible to add an outdoor temperature sensor to enhance heating efficiency? When the temperature drops, can the heat pump be operated alongside auxiliary heat?
I have a wire stripper to tidy up the wires while installing the new thermostat.
I just received the package.
Would it be difficult to run an 18/2 thermostat wire to the thermostat for an outdoor sensor? It seems there might be two extra wires, but it's always advisable to pull the sensor wire in its own insulation for precision. Then, you can place the outdoor sensor in a shaded area of the house.
I'm here to assist you with your home improvement needs. What specific project are you considering?
Connect it to the two S1 terminals on the thermostat.
Good morning! Have you had a chance to install the new thermostat yet?
LoL
Good Morning

I have relatives in FW.
Ok
Did you want to include the outdoor sensor?
I'm really considering it because if it has the sensor, the thermostat should be able to control itself.
Have you conducted a test on the heating system?
No, let's test it now before it gets too hot outside.
Activate the heating and set the temperature to 3 degrees above the current indoor temperature. Does the display indicate "heat aux heat"?
Customer attachment 9/17/2022 12:58:10 PM
Does it indicate auxiliary heat? Give it some time.
No, it doesn't indicate auxiliary heat.
