Introduction to Taconic PCB Materials: Features and Benefits

In the world of high speed and continuously evolving electronics industry, the efficiency and performance of a circuit largely depends on the substrate material used. Taconic PCBs make a difference and they have become popular due to their specific properties and features. The Taconic laminates play a remarkable role in reducing signal loss and help in increasing the lifespan of the device. The material used for manufacturing Taconic PCB is highly durable woven glass reinforced or ceramic Polytetrafluoroethylene material which has the capacity to handle high frequencies.

What are Taconic PCB Materials?

Taconic PCB materials are printed circuit board laminates that are produced by Taconic (which is now acquired by AGC). Taconic is famous for the production of PTFE materials for high frequency printed circuit boards. With exceptional material properties, Taconic PCBs are used across a wide range of industries from telecommunication to aerospace. Taconic PCBs use materials like FR-4, RF-43, RF-45, TLY, and TSM-XT. Taconic materials exhibit excellent thermal, electrical and mechanical properties. They can be easily fabricated. Generally, Taconic material thickness can range from 0.0001” for flexible circuits to 0.250” for multilayer boards.

Taconic PCB finds its use in the telecommunication, aerospace and automotive sectors due to its low signal and dielectric loss. Besides, Taconic PCBs are used in many areas of applications that demand high frequency, thermal stability, thermal robustness, and high electrical efficiency. They are used in various fields like

  • Base Station Antenna
  • Radar Communications
  • Satellite Communications
  • Automotive sector
  • Aerospace
  • Power amplifier and transformer
  • Military application
  • Medical Imaging
  • Bioinformatics
  • Millimetre wave Applications
  • 5G Applications
  • High density Interconnect and Multilayer board
  • Telecommunication
  • Microwave Applications
Key Features of Taconic PCB Materials
  • Taconic PCB materials have a lower dissipation factor.
  • Taconic PCB materials have a low moisture absorption in a humid environment.
  • Taconic PCB materials have a wide range of dielectric constants.
  • Taconic PCB materials have Low signal loss.
  • Taconic PCB materials have extremely stable thermal and electrical properties.
  • Taconic PCB materials are suitable for HF and RF applications.
  • Taconic PCB materials are relatively cheap.
  • Taconic PCB materials can withstand high temperatures without any significant change in shape size or performance.
Main Types of Taconic PCB Materials

Woven glass reinforced PTFE laminate: This type of Taconic laminate is made up of fibreglass coated with PTFE material. Generally used in Low-cost antenna design etc. Example :TLY-3, TLY-5, TLX-8, TLC-32, TLE-95., etc.

Ceramic filled PTFE laminate: This is a low-cost Taconic laminate and gives its best performance in microwave and radio wave applications. Example: RF-30, RF-35, RF-60, RF-10, NF-30, TLF-35, TSM-DS3., etc.

Hydrocarbon laminate: Hydrocarbon Taconic laminates are made up of polybutadiene mainly used for microstrip antenna and power amplifiers.Example: HF341,HF340,HF300F, etc.

Some commonly used types of Taconic PCB materials are as below:

  • TLY-5:This is clad with copper brass and aluminium and is suitable for satellite, radar and cellular communication. The dielectric constant is approximately 2.20 and the dielectric thickness is 0.0050. TLY-5 is normally used in low cost applications.TLY-5A is a high frequency laminate used in power amplifiers, satellite communication, automotive and radar applications. This Taconic laminate exhibits the lowest dissipation factor among all the Taconic laminates.
  • RF-35:This laminate is used in power amplifiers, microwave applications, and several hybrid builds. It is ROHs compliant.
  • RF-43:This is a ceramic filled Polytetrafluoroethylene having a low dielectric constant of 3.66. It is used in millimetre wave, Digital and microwave design and applications.
  • RF-45: This is a microfiber glass reinforced ceramic filled Polytetrafluoroethylene material having a low dielectric constant of 3.5.
  • TLY:This is a th
