While not the most complex plumbing job, anyone with a bit of home improvement project experience and a willingness to check out some YouTube videos can do it proficiently. But, one good aid to have is a diagram setting out the parts of a kitchen sink. It’s always nice having a visual aid for these types of projects.

  • Sink: A plumbing fixture used for dishwashing, washing hands and other purposes.
  • Escutcheon: A flat piece of metal used to protect and hide away the hole for the pipe or valve.
  • Faucet Lever: Lever used to control the water’s flow from the spout.
  • Spray Hose: Connects the water supply to the faucet.
  • Countertop: A flat surface around the sink.
  • Garbage Disposer: A device installed under the sink between the drain and the trap and used to grind up and wash away food scraps and other kitchen refuse.
  • Drain Washer Drain Hose: Used to pump water.
  • Dish Washer Water Supply: Water supply line for the dishwasher.
  • Trap: A shaped device (usually P-shaped for household use) that traps debris and prevents sewer gases from leaking into the home.
  • Cold Water Supply Line: The system that allows cold water to be supplied from the main water source to where it is intended to be used.
  • Hot Water Supply Line: The system that allows hot water to be supplied from the main water source to where it is intended to be used.
  • Shutoff Valve: Controls the flow of water.
  • Friction Gasket: A protective barrier creating high amount of friction between two moving surfaces.
  • Rubber Gasket: A seal that serves as a protective barrier between two surfaces for the purpose of preventing any leakage of liquid or gas.
  • Strainer Flange: A piece of metal connected to the strainer.
  • Strainer Body: Used to filter out debris in the water system.
  • Spray Head: Pops up and sprays a pattern of water over an area.
  • Handle/Lever: Used to turn the tap on and off.
  • Spout Assembly: Parts used to control the spout.
  • Aerator: Small mesh screens placed on the end of faucets and used to regulate the flow of water into multiple small streams so that the volume of water that flows from the faucet would be significantly reduced.
  • Compression Coupling: Connects two pipes to a fixture or valve.
  • Spray Hose: Connects the water supply to the faucet.
  • Supply Tube: Connects waters supply to the faucet.
  • Cleanout: Pipe fittings that can be accessed to clear clogs and debris.
  • Drain Pipe: A long tube made of metal or plastic that transports sewage and grey water from the building and regulates air pressure in the pipes to avoid clogging.
  • Locknut: Placement of a locked or turned off position on an energy-isolating device.
