This guide provides steps to diagnose and repair a leaking food waste disposer.
Leaks can occur from several areas on a garbage disposal. Identifying the source is the first step.
Water leaking from directly under the sink bowl often indicates a failed seal at the sink flange. Tightening the mounting bolts or replacing the plumber's putty may be necessary.
Check the hose connection from the dishwasher and the side inlet for loose fittings or cracks.
Ensure the pipes connecting to the disposal outlet are properly aligned and sealed. A loose slip nut can cause a leak.
Water coming from the bottom of the unit or the reset button area typically means the internal seals have failed, requiring unit replacement.
Once the leak source is identified, follow the appropriate repair method.
Disconnect the disposal, remove it from the mounting assembly, clean the old putty, apply new plumber's putty, and reassemble.
Tighten loose hose clamps or drain pipe slip nuts. Replace any cracked hoses or fittings.
If the housing is leaking, the disposal must be replaced. Ensure the power is off, disconnect plumbing and wiring, and install the new unit.
