Description

Oxytocin is a nonapeptide hormone which is produced endogenously in the hypothalamus. Oxytocin promotes contractions of the smooth muscular tissue from the oestrogen sensitised uterus and lacteal gland.

Indications

Labour weakness, promotion of involutio uteri, retentio secundinarum, uterus atonia, uterus haemorrhages and treatment of agalactia postpartum.

Contraindications

  • Unopened cervix.
  • Wrong position of foetus or uterus.
  • Obstructive dystocia.
  • Hypersensitivity to oxytocin.

Side Effects

Only in case of overdoses:

  • A short-lived vasodilatation and lowering of blood pressure.
  • Hyperstimulation uteri through which the uterus contracts more often and longer.
  • In a state of spasm of the uterus oxygen supply of the foetus can be put in danger.
  • Water retention.
  • Influence on foetal circulation.

Dosage

For intramuscular or subcutaneous administration.

  • Mares and cows : 2 – 2.5 ml.
  • Ewes and goats : 0.5 – 1.5 ml.
  • Sows: 1 – 2 ml.

Withdrawal Times

  • For meat : 0 days.
  • For milk: 0 days.

Packaging

Bottles of 50 and 100 ml.
