Weight-loss meds are everywhere in the news right now. Zepbound® (Tirzepatide) is one of these newer ones.
Initially approved by the FDA as Mounjaro® for treating Type 2 diabetes, studies later revealed that Tirzepatide can help with weight loss when combined with regular exercise and a low-calorie diet. That led to Zepbound® getting the green light for weight management.
Getting the dosage right with any medication is crucial for safety and results, and with something like Zepbound®, it might take some weeks to hit that steady dose that works best for you. Below, we’ll go over the recommended Zepbound® dosages for weight loss, but always stick to what your healthcare team advises.
You’ll take Zepbound® once a week, preferably on the same day each week. It comes in a prefilled, ready-to-use pen, so once your healthcare provider shows you how to use it, you can do it at home. Alternatively, someone else can help if you prefer not to do it yourself.
You can inject it into your stomach, thigh, or upper arm, but your stomach might be the easiest spot. Just be sure to switch up the area a bit to avoid irritating your skin.
To kick off, the suggested starting dose for weight loss is 2.5 mg once a week for the first 4 weeks. This lower dose helps your body adjust and keep side effects like nausea and diarrhea in check, so you might not notice much weight loss at first.
At week 5, your healthcare team will probably bump it up to 5 mg a week for the next 4 weeks. By week 9, they might increase it again, based on how you’re responding and if you’re having any side effects.
It’s usually advised to only increase doses by 2.5 mg at a time, with at least 4 weeks between each change. The highest recommended dose for weight loss is 15 mg once a week.
When you start Tirzepatide for weight loss, you’ll usually begin with 2.5 mg once a week. After four weeks, if everything’s going well and you’re tolerating it okay, your doctor might bump it up to 5 mg weekly. They typically adjust the dose by 2.5 mg every four weeks, depending on how you’re doing.
The highest dose of Tirzepatide is 15 mg/0.5 mL. But the right max dose for you might be different. Your doctor will help figure out your best maintenance dose based on how you’re handling it and how your weight loss is going.
Just like with Zepbound® (Tirzepatide), doses should be tailored for each person during their weight loss journey. Here’s a sample dosing chart:
If needed, your doctor will set up a plan that starts with a low dose and slowly increases over time. They’ll keep track of your progress with regular check-ins and tweak your dose as necessary.
