The Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art has named the distinguished honorees for its upcoming annual fall gala. At the evening celebration Thursday, Sept. 17, the Archives’ highest honors will be presented to three recipients—Martin Puryear, Ann Temkin and the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation—in recognition of their outstanding contributions as leading American artists and art advocates.

Puryear will receive an Archives of American Art Medal, Temkin will receive the Lawrence A. Fleischman Award for Scholarly Excellence in the Field of American Art History and the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation will receive the Archives of American Art Award for Philanthropic Leadership.

The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation announced that it has awarded $4.5M in Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI) grants to 83 visual arts organizations across the United States and Puerto Rico, supporting energy efficiency, clean energy generation, emissions reduction, and climate resilience initiatives. The awards bring the cumulative FCI investment to over $21.8 million conferred to nearly 300 institutions since the program's 2021 launch. The first U.S.-based grant program of its kind in the visual arts, FCI has evolved from a visionary initiative into the field's leading grantmaking program for environmental and institutional sustainability, funding work at every stage, from energy audits and feasability studies to large-scale capital projects.
